“There are so many kinds of love stories.”
Suzanne DeWitt Hall
“Embracing each person’s uniqueness is what makes the world magical.”
Declan DeWitt Hall
What you’re about to read is a love story.
When Suzanne and Declan DeWitt Hall became friends at a socially conservative church, they thought they were just two unhappily married straight women trying to do their best to please God and be Proverbs 31 wives. They came from vastly different Christian faith traditions, but both believed that same-sex relationships were “sinful.” Then they fell in love, and in the twinkling of a divine eye, everything changed.
Falling in love meant leaving behind nearly everything they understood about church, sexuality, gender—and ultimately—divine love. Deconstructing all these concepts meant facing the pain of condemnation by family members, friends, and churches. It also meant evaluating Christian scripture in a new way and developing a world view driven by ever-expanding love rather than by a handful of damning Bible passages. From these explorations, the Where True Love Is books and movement were born. Born out of love, written and promoted as gifts of love.
As a decade unfolded and the couple became increasingly involved in LGBTQI+ issues, Declan was able to embrace his transgender identity, and Suzanne recognized her asexuality. Each realization came with pain, research, evaluation, and ultimately, freedom. Each brought them closer together. Each fueled the encouragement offered through The Where True Love Is Movement.
Embracing the LGBTQIA+ faith community meant walking with people who suffered in ways that were familiar to the couple, and in ways they’d not had to face personally. To address that suffering, Suzanne continued writing affirming devotionals, and Declan built a vibrant online community, sharing resources from widely ranging Christian denominations, mystical thinkers from other faith traditions, and wisdom from sources completely unrelated to religion at all.
The Where True Love Is Movement breathes in the pain of the world and breathes out the profound reality that God loves us in all the unique ways we reflect their image. Today, hundreds of millions of people are reached each month through Declan’s tireless work, as The Where True Love Is Movement continues to offer messages of hope to people of all sexual orientations, gender identities, faith systems, and walks of life. It’s a love story that continues to unfold.
